What Is a Nespresso Machine?

Nespresso machines are single-serve espresso makers. If you’re familiar with Keurig coffee makers, you can think of a Nespresso machine as a similar tool for making espresso instead of brewed coffee.

Nespresso machines use a high-powered water pump to force hot water through a capsule containing finely ground coffee. The result is a bold and robust coffee experience that delivers a ton of flavor and a delectable aroma during brewing that you’d normally expect from a coffee shop.

“Nespresso” can refer either to the company that makes these single-serve espresso machines or to the ground coffee that comes in Nespresso capsules.

Why Buy a Nespresso Machine?

With the many options available for brewing coffee these days, you may be wondering why you should commit to a Nespresso machine. We adore our Nespresso machine, and we’re happy to tell you why!

Firstly, the convenience cannot be beaten. Nespressos make getting your usual Starbucks latte or cappuccino as easy as walking into your kitchen and hitting a button – no lines, no waiting in a drive-through, no getting out of your pajamas!

Some Nespresso latte machines can froth milk for you, and most take the learning curve out of pulling a shot of espresso out of the equation. Many devices offer customized shot recipes at the hit of just one button. This simplicity comes in handy first thing in the morning!

Lastly, we recommend a Nespresso machine because they make bolder, more flavorful coffee than most single-serve coffee machines or drip coffee makers. They can produce a delicious and strong espresso without multiple thousands of dollars spent on the traditional best espresso machines.

Best Nespresso Machine Buyer’s Guide

As you can see from our Nespresso reviews above, choosing the best Nespresso machine for you isn’t as simple as you might think! Whether you purchase one of the machines above or continue your search elsewhere, make sure you consider the below factors.

Customization

We love espresso and the brewing process, so it’s a big deal to us when a Nespresso machine offers the ability to customize your shot with temperature, volume, and brew time to make an espresso that is customized just for us.

You may prefer simplicity and don’t want to pay more for the ability to customize your coffee experience, so we recommend selecting your machine based on what brewing features you want.

Versatility

Many coffee drinkers will be pleased just with Nespresso’s espresso shots. Other machines can make ristrettos and lungos, some can froth milk for mixed coffee drinks, and others can make regular brewed coffee too. Make sure you choose a Nespresso machine with your desired coffee options in mind.

Convenience

Lastly, you should consider how convenient your machine is to display and use. You’ll have to find a balance between the counter space your machine takes up and how often it needs routine maintenance.

Smaller machines are easy to find space for on the counter. However, they usually come with smaller water tanks and spent pod holders, so you’ll need to refill the water and empty the capsule storage tank more frequently.

How to Use Nespresso Machine

A Nespresso machine is very straightforward to use, thanks to the Nespresso capsule system it uses. Simply put in your favorite espresso capsule, close the lid, and choose your brewing style. Some machines require just one button press, while others with more customization may need some more interaction. Either way, making a delicious espresso with a Nespresso machine couldn’t be simpler.

Some machines use pod-recognition technology to customize a brewing technique based on the pod inserted. These machines can usually make regular coffee but still keep the process simple. You just add a capsule that is made for regular coffee and…well, that’s it. We told you it was simple! You’ll just need to buy regular coffee capsules as opposed to espresso capsules.

Most Nespresso machines just require minor maintenance like descaling and regular cleaning with a Nespresso cleaning solution. Descaling and cleaning are also made to be very simple and will require that you add the desired solution to your water reservoir, run the machine several times, empty the tank, and run again with fresh water.

How to Choose Nespresso Pods

Choosing pods made by Nespresso is as simple as picking what flavors or strength you like the most. If you opt for third-party capsules, make sure that they fit your device and won’t get rejected by your Nespresso machine, leading to wasted money and capsules.

You can also buy a reusable capsule if you’re concerned with your impact on the environment using disposable ones. Reusable pods are less convenient and can lead to a bit of a mess when you’re trying to fill them, but they do generally work well and still produce delicious coffee if you fill them with beans ground finely enough for espresso.

Nespresso Original vs Vertuo

Nespresso has two different lines of machines and associated capsules: their Original line and their Vertuo line. The machines within each line vary, so neither line is better in terms of pod storage, water tank capacity, or durability.

The most significant difference is in how the machines extract. Original machines use a high pressure pump to force water through the capsule, while Vertuo machines introduce centrifusion to get a more even extraction.

Nespresso Vertuo coffee machines have the pod recognition technology we mentioned previously, so the ideal brewing method will be decided for you based on the pod you insert. This technology makes brewing different shot types and regular coffee as effortless as possible.

Nespresso vs Keurig

Many people hear “single-serve” in reference to Nespresso machines and wonder how they stack up against one of the largest names in single-serve coffee: Keurig.

Keurig machines are designed to make regular brewed coffee, similar to what you would get from a drip machine. Nespresso machines make espresso, which is bolder, stronger, and usually more flavorful than brewed coffee.

Except for the type of coffee they make, the two brands are fairly similar. However, brewed coffee and espresso couldn’t be much more different! Which machine is best for you comes down to personal preference.

Which Nespresso Coffee Machine Is Right for You?

Nespresso machines come with many different features, and choosing the right one to suit your needs and taste can be challenging. Hopefully, these Nespresso reviews have helped you narrow down your best overall options and hone in on the machine that will bring you the most joy and provide you with the best coffee or espresso every time.

Our top pick for versatility and brewing customization is the Nespresso Creatista Plus because it gives you the most options for espresso shots, mixed coffee drinks, and brewed coffee. A more affordable option that still offers some drink customization is the Nespresso VertuoPlus Deluxe. This machine makes different espresso shots and brewed coffee at the touch of just one button.
